In what was labeled the 'ultimate experience,' Jaguar teamed up with the Ritz-Carlton hotel chain to offer what must have been among the most sumptuous of New Year's millennium weekend celebrations.
The upscale chain offered a New Year's weekend that included three nights in the presidential suite; a personal butler and chef; elegant meals and select wines; attendance at a special New Year's Eve party; his and her 18-karat Bulgari watches; leather trinkets and mementos; and the use of a 2000 Jaguar sedan - with or without chauffeur - for the period.
Four customers plunked down the requisite $100,000 for the privilege. The couple who selected the Ritz-Carlton in Boston were thrilled to dance the night away to the music of Peter Duchin's High Society Band. They sipped vintage wines, were presented with their own bottle of a favored Madeira, enjoyed the antics of a magician and sang along with professionals crooning Gilbert and Sullivan tunes.
The other Ritz-Carlton sites selected by $100,000 customers were Laguna Niguel, Calif.; Montreal; and Cancun, Mexico.
'While our hotels have many guest packages that include limousine transportation, this was the first companywide promotion on such a grand scale,' said Shelby Taylor, Ritz-Carlton corporate public relations coordinator in Atlanta. 'It was unique to offer guests a vehicle with chauffeur, or one they could drive themselves.'
Taylor said the Ritz-Carlton has a strong relationship with Ford through its hotel in Dearborn, Mich., near Ford headquarters; hence the selection of Jaguar for the package.
Taylor said in a few instances, such as with its hotel on Maui, where there is no Jaguar dealer, the vehicle offered was a Mercedes-Benz.
