Dealer Web sites already have been hack-attacked.
There have been incidents of disgruntled customers hacking into dealer Web sites and changing the content to embarrass dealers, said Skip Harkness, a 20-group consultant with the National Automobile Dealers Association.
In one case, a General Motors dealer with two stores in Oregon and Washington had an angry customer break into the Web site and sabotage the sales and service appointment system, Harkness said. The hacker sent e-mail to customers changing and canceling appointment times. The e-mail looked just as if it had been sent by the dealerships.
Though the dealer has a suspect in mind, the case is still under investigation.
'These people don't see this as a crime,' Harkness said. 'They see hacking as a sign of their intellectual capabilities.'
