Motorola, Lear plan joint venture
DETROIT - Lear Corp., the Southfield, Mich., automotive interiors supplier, plans to form a joint venture with Motorola Inc. to design Internet access and navigation technology into Ford Motor Co. cars and trucks.
Motorola's wireless communications technology will be combined with Lear's instrument panels and center and overhead consoles for Ford. The 50-50 partnership will be based in Dearborn, Mich., with Lear as the Tier 1 supplier to Ford for the integrated interior systems. Motorola, of Northbrook, Ill., supplies electronics.
EATON PICKS MEXICO SITE
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Eaton Corp.'s Truck Components Operations of Kalamazoo has chosen a site in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to build a $100 million transmission manufacturing factory.
The plant will build Class 8 heavy-truck transmissions for North America beginning in the first quarter of 2001. Eaton Corp. of Cleveland supplies valves, climate controls and electronics.
SUPPLIER ORDERS LAYOFFS
LOS ANGELES - Bonded Motors Inc., a supplier of remanufactured motors to major auto parts retailers, plans to lay off 8 percent of its 475-person work force following a fourth-quarter loss.
Bonded Motors of Los Angeles said its auditors plan to issue an opinion based on its fiscal 1999 revenues that the company may not be able to continue as a going concern, according to Bloomberg News.
ARVIN UPS CHINA STAKE
COLUMBUS, Ind. - Arvin Industries Inc. of Columbus has obtained majority ownership in its Shanghai, China, joint venture exhaust company, increasing its stake to 55 percent from 35 percent.
Arvin bought the additional stake in Shanghai Hua Wen Exhaust Systems Co. Ltd. from joint venture partner Xian Hua Group Co. Ltd. Arvin plans to begin building catalytic converters at the unit early this year. That will let Shanghai Hua Wen become a supplier of complete exhaust systems.
CINCINNATI - Trim Parts Inc. of Milford, Ohio, a supplier of aftermarket emblems, lenses, scripts and other trim parts for collectors, has acquired a majority interest in Ohio Auto Mat Inc. of Harrison, Ohio, a manufacturer of molded auto carpet.
