In an effort to show that it can run with the big dogs, Hyundai Motor America conducted an unusual test at a shopping mall in Escondido, Calif., this month. It concealed a Sonata sedan and a Toyota Camry in brown paper -- everything but the windows. According to Hyundai, 436 of the 591 participants who drove both vehicles favored the Sonata. Hyundai spokeswoman Donna Kane said the results show that 'if customers eliminate any preconceived notions ... they will find that the Sonata compares favorably to other leading manufacturers' vehicles while costing considerably less.' So which is which? The Sonata is in the background.
