TOKYO - Imported Jaguars are on the verge of outselling imported Fords in Japan.
A year ago - indeed, as recently as May - imported Ford-badged cars were outselling Jaguars by a 5-to-1 ratio. (The tallies exclude Mazda-built Japanese cars rebadged for sale in Japan as Ford models.)
But Ford sales have tanked recently, as Ford Motor Co. (Japan) has struggled to redefine its dealer strategy and to review its lineup.
In August, Ford-brand import sales totaled 299 compared with Jaguar's 213. In October, the gap narrowed even more, 284 to 231.
Jaguar will not become the volume brand for Ford in Japan, however. That title belongs solidly to Volvo Cars. It sold 1,298 in October.
