SAN DIEGO - Hyundai Motor America is expected to receive a new flagship sedan in the 2001 model year. The sedan, sold as the XG in South Korea, will be priced in the low-$20,000 range. It has yet to receive a name for the U.S. market, Hyundai sources said.
The car will be slotted above the Sonata in Hyundai's lineup and will be built on a stretched version of the Sonata platform. The XG will have a wheelbase of about 107 inches and be powered by a 190-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine. Hyundai expects to sell 2,500 to 5,000 annually. Competitors will include the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima.
'We're confident we'll be selling volume by the end of 2000. The thing that's still open is the pricing,' said Finbarr O'Neill, CEO of Hyundai Motor America. 'The approach must be consistent and value-priced.'
