DaimlerChrysler will produce 5,000 injection-molded plastic roofs next year for Jeep Wranglers, the company announced last week. The roofs won't need paint because color can be injected into the plastic before the roof is formed. Someday, DaimlerChrysler hopes to eliminate costly paint shops in some factories by building vehicles with thermoplastic body panels.
