Ford Motor Co. plans to sell cars directly to consumers over the Internet - but not without its dealers as part of the process.
'Our intention is to use the Ford dealer body as the ultimate presenter and deliverer of products to consumers,' Ford CEO Jac Nasser said in an interview last week. 'Cars and trucks are a lot different than books in this case. I don't see vehicles being shipped by Federal Express direct to customers.' Nasser said the Internet, the availability of information and changing consumer wants will change the roles of dealer and manufacturer.
Good dealers, he said, will become Internet-literate and use the Net to connect with customers.
