For the first time in 14 months, U.S. light-vehicle sales have fallen. GM, Ford and DaimlerChrysler slipped in October. Results from Japanese automakers were mixed, and the Europeans fared well.
Despite the setback, the industry remains on track to smash its all-time record, set in 1986.
The October summary:
Industry sales down 1.3 percent from 1998
Cars down 3.3 percent
Trucks up 0.9 percent
After 10 months, the industry was 8.9 percent ahead of 1998 and heading for full-year record
