General Motors produced its 2 millionth U.S. truck of 1999 on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The company's U.S. truck production is up 27 percent, or 436,617 units, over 1998 because of the 54-day strike at G M last year.
Ford Motor Co. surpassed several million marks last week. Its U.S. car and truck production reached 3 million Tuesday, Oct. 26. Ford's U.S. truck output passed 2 million on Monday, Oct. 25. U.S. Ford car production reached 1 million on Friday, Oct. 29.
Two Ford plants will be down for several weeks because of slow sales of the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique. Ford's Kansas City, Mo., car plant will be down this week and return to work Tuesday, Nov. 16; the Cuautitlan, Mexico, plant also will be down this week and will return Monday, Nov. 22.
