The 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse has been transformed from a sporty car to a bigger, more comfortable coupe that still goes fast.
The redesigned car is 3 inches longer, 0.5 inch wider and 1.8 inches taller, and it rides on a 2-inch-longer wheelbase than the 1999 Eclipse, Mitsubishi's best-selling model.
The previous car's turbocharged engine has been replaced by a slightly less powerful but more refined V-6 borrowed from the Galant sedan. The Chrysler 2.0-liter four-cylinder has been replaced by a Mitsubishi-built 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that has balance shafts and liquid-filled engine mounts. The hyper-performance multilink front suspension has been replaced by softer MacPherson struts.
The all-wheel-drive model has been dropped. A convertible Spyder is due in March 2000.
