Trade group names chief
MEXICO CITY - The Mexican Automotive Industry Association has named a new leader. Cesar Flores, a veteran of Mexican auto trade groups, will hold the title of executive president. The association had been headed by an executive from a member company.
Fausto Cuevas will remain as the association's director general.
'This change was made to have somebody neutral leading the association,' said Flores. 'We will focus on three issues: local market growth, taxes and international commercial agreements.'
D/C SELLS ARMORED CARS
MEXICO CITY - DaimlerChrysler Mexico sees strong sales potential for its new line of Mercedes-Benz armored vehicles. The C-class 'Guard' car will be armored in Mexico by Wendler, an independent company.
The E class and S class will come armored from the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen, Germany.
The company has not decided whether the M class, which is imported from Austria, will be armored in Europe or in Mexico.
A CLASS DUE IN OCTOBER
MEXICO CITY - The Brazilian-built Mercedes-Benz A class will arrive in Mexican showrooms in October.
Three models will be offered: Classic, for the equivalent of under $20,000; Classic Plus, for under $22,000; and Elegance, for under $25,000.
The Mercedes-Benz franchise in Mexico now has 15 dealerships and two under construction in Quere-taro and Veracruz. As many as three more are expected next year.
MEXICO WON'T GET SMART
MEXICO CITY - DaimlerChrysler Mexico executives say the Smart car from the European Micro Compact Car venture won't be sold in Mexico, despite the popularity of small cars in the country.
AUDI TO ALTER PRODUCTS
PUEBLA - Carlos Fernandez, general director of Audi de Mexico, has some product changes in the works.
He plans a more affordable A3, called the Attraction, at $2,500 below the current version. With the A4, he will offer more equipment, such as an electronic stability system and xenon headlights.
For the A6, a biturbo engine will be available at the end of this month.
There also will be a lower-priced version of the A8; it will deliver 260 hp, down from the current 310.
Fernandez also is studying the addition of five sales points through the company's eight existing dealers.
FORD LAUNCHES LS
MEXICO CITY - Ford of Mexico launched the Lincoln LS earlier this month.
GOLF, POINTER TO BOW
PUEBLA - Volkswagen de Mexico will introduce a new Golf and a new Pointer this week. Both will be imported from Brazil.
