Transplant automakers in the United States are considering larger roles for suppliers. Here are some of the approaches being considered.
Toyota: Considers using outside suppliers for the first time on some components scheduled to go into its Indiana-built full-sized sport-utility in 2000.
Nissan: Studies the outsourcing of modules on cockpits, doors, front ends and headliners for North American production.
Honda: Weighs a higher degree of supplier involvement on the full-sized light trucks it will build in Lincoln, Ala.
