To dispel doubts of those who fear a plastic pickup bed won't be tough enough, Lawrence Burns, General Motors' vice president of research, development and planning, does his John Henry imitation at the University of Michigan Management Briefing Seminars in Traverse City, Mich. Burns announced last week that GM will offer the industry's first cargo bed and tailgate made entirely of plastic - a 6.5-foot box that will be an option on Chevrolet's extended-cab 2001 Silverado. Sources said the plastic boxes weigh about 250 pounds, 50 pounds less than steel boxes. GM did not announce a price.
