These are among the causes important to Edsel Ford II:
CATCH: Ford is chairman of Caring Athletes Team for Children's & Henry Ford Hospitals, the charity founded by former Detroit Tigers Manager Sparky Anderson to aid pediatrics at those Detroit hospitals.
Ford has helped build an endowment of more than $4 million; the nonprofit group has given more than $1.3 million to the hospitals. This year's contribution should be about $150,000, with anything else raised going toward the endowment.
Ford thinks it is important for nonprofits to build endowments that can generate a steady source of income. CATCH allocates to its endowment 75 percent to 80 percent of the money it raises, while the rest goes toward annual needs at the hospitals.
Diabetes: Ford hopes to attract a record number of people for an international fund-raising walk this fall. One of the major sites for the walk is to be the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich. GM has pledged a donation to each walker, and Ford hopes to bring in thousands of people, many in Ford Motor Co. shirts, to collect those GM dollars.
Legacy work: As part of his work on the family legacy, Ford has helped put together Ford Motor's new Spirit of Ford, the company's interactive science and technology center, which displays current and future innovations in automotive design engineering and manufacturing. Spirit of Ford is across from the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Mich.
Ford also is working to mark the company's 100th anniversary in 2003 and to preserve the historic homes of his grandfather, Edsel Ford, and his great-grandfather, Henry Ford.
Salvation Army: When Ford joined the Salvation Army's national board of directors, he said the group needed some sort of marketing campaign to make it as well-known as the American Red Cross. Salvation Army leaders said they always had relied on personal contacts rather than national marketing campaigns to spread the organization's message. Ford called one of Ford Motor's ad agencies, Young & Rubicam, and the 'need knows no season' campaign was born. A similar call to J. Walter Thompson aided CATCH.
Detroit's tricentennial: Ford is chairman of Detroit 300, which plans to mark the city's 300th birthday with a major gift to improve the community. The committee is reviewing proposals.
