General Motors made its last car in Flint last week. Although it does make pickups, GM's original hometown is now carless. That's sad. It would be nice to think that a company and a town could serve each other forever.
Some Flint people, notably funny filmmaker Michael Moore, blame GM's foreign business. That's simply wrong. GM's Flint production has moved elsewhere in Michigan and America. And GM's loss of 17 points of market share since 1978 shifted that production over to Ford or DaimlerChrysler or transplants.
Flint thought GM owed it a living; GM didn't agree.
