PARIS - As CEO of Seat SA at the Barcelona motor show in early June, he was seen and photographed several times with Renault CEO Louis Schweitzer.
Now, Pierre-Alain De Smedt is working for Schweitzer as Renault executive vice president. He replaces Carlos Ghosn, who transferred to affiliate Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. as COO, effective June 25.
De Smedt, a Belgian who spent 26 years at Volkswagen AG, Seat's parent, resigned June 18. He took over as Seat chairman in December 1996, after heading VW's Brazilian operations since 1993.
At Renault, the 55-year-old De Smedt will assume Ghosn's responsibilities for advanced projects, vehicle and powertrain development, purchasing, manufacturing and vehicle programs.
He also will have direct oversight of Renault activities in the Mercosur trade region of Latin America.
