Sales declined last year at General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., the top three global manufacturers of cars and trucks.
But No. 4 Volkswagen AG continued its strong growth, selling nearly half a million more vehicles in 1998 than it did in 1997.
Those are some of the highlights of the global sales and production landscape in the 1999 Automotive News Market Data Book.
The vehicle manufacturers are ranked on production and sales totals of all vehicles except motorcycles and off-road construction vehicles. They range from No. 1 GM, which sold 8.1 million vehicles last year, to No. 44 Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd., which sold 1,601 cars.
Worldwide vehicle sales of 52.7 million in 1998 dropped 3.2 percent from 1997.
