North American car and truck production reached an all-time any-month high in March, eclipsing the record of 1,580,127 set last November. The 1,649,498 vehicles produced comprised 783,288 cars and 866,210 trucks. Production was up 7.6 percent over March 1998 and 14.8 percent over February 1999.
Ford Motor Co. ended production of the Ford Ranger at the Louisville, Ky., plant on April 2. The pickup will continue to be produced in Edison, N.J., and St. Paul, Minn. Louisville will continue to build the Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer.
Ford Motor is building Ford Excursion, Ford Focus and Lincoln LS test vehicles. Production of the Excursion and Focus began in March; production of the LS started in January.
