The Automotive News list of top 150 suppliers ranks companies according to their 1998 North American sales of original-equipment parts. Sales of components for light vehicles and commercial trucks are counted, but aftermarket sales are not.
Most companies provided their own sales statistics. In some cases, Automotive News used estimates of industry analysts. Some companies that have appeared on the list in years past have not been included this year because fresh information was not available.
Mergers and acquisitions can complicate the list. Dana Corp.'s figures, for example, reflect its 1998 purchase of Echlin Inc.; Echlin is not listed separately, although it was independent for much of the year. But Lear Corp. and UT Automotive Inc. both appear on the list; Lear's planned purchase of UT Automotive has not been completed.
The Automotive News ranking of top global suppliers of original-equipment parts will be published June 21.
