Bundy to add air-conditioning parts business
Bundy Group will pay $33 million for the automotive air-conditioning component business of European supplier Kenmore Italiana. Kenmore Italiana, based in Milan, Italy, has annual sales of $29 million and plants in Italy, Germany, India and the United States. Bundy, a fluid-handling systems supplier based in Warren, Mich., has been buying into the automotive air-conditioning business in North America and Europe over the past year. It also has opened an air-conditioning component plant in the Czech Republic and will open another in Brazil this year.
HEADLINERS - TrimQuest LLC, a new joint venture between Johnson Controls Inc. of Milwau-kee and Dearborn, Mich.-based Plastech Engineered Products, will supply integrated vehicle overhead systems and headliners to Ford Motor Co. The venture will produce overhead systems and polyurethane headliners for the current-model Ford Crown Victoria, Econoline van, F-series pickup, Mercury Grand Marquis and Villager minivan.
TRIM - United Technologies Automotive Inc. of Dearborn, Mich., and Royal Oak, Mich.-based Farmer Group have formed North American Interiors, a joint venture to produce interior trim components. The venture will assemble sun visors and other overhead-system components, with plans to expand into other products. The company plans to open a factory in Michigan or Ohio and begin production as early as this summer. Farmer Group, a minority-owned firm, will own 51 percent of the venture, and UT Automotive 49 percent.
SAFETY-RESTRAINT - Autoliv Inc. of Stockholm, Sweden, will open a new plant in Turkey later this year to supply European customers with airbags, seat belts and steering wheels. The $10 million plant, 60 miles outside Istanbul, was prompted by contracts with Ford and Renault to supply new Turkish-made vehicles. Autoliv expects the Turkish domestic market to grow from 350,000 vehicles a year in 1998 to 550,000 in 2001. The new plant will additionally export to other European markets.
ENGINES - Plumley Division of Toledo, Ohio-based Dana Corp. will supply composite cam cover modules for two new Jaguar engines, the AJ-V6 and the AJ-V8. The engines are used in the 2000 Jaguar S-Type. The contracts bring to 20 the number of composite cam cover applications for Plumley.
ACQUISITION - Timken Co. of Canton, Ohio, has taken majority control of its Indian roller-bearing affiliate, Tata Timken Ltd., by buying out its partner for $27.8 million. Timken previously held 40 percent of the company, which produces tapered roller bearings for the truck and tractor market. Timken acquired the 40 percent interest held by Tata Iron and Steel Co. of India. The affiliate will now be called Timken India, a subsidiary of Timken Co. The unit is still 20 percent publicly owned.
HONORS - Air Gage Co. of Livonia, Mich., has earned Ford Motor Co.'s Q1 designation. Air Gage designs and manufactures gauges to inspect auto components for Ford.
HONORS - The French government has given Oxford Automotive Inc. and Dana Corp. Invest in France Automotive Awards, which recognize North American automotive organizations that recently have established operations or have a strong presence in France. Oxford, of Troy, Mich., purchased the Cofimeta Group of Paris in February. Cofimeta, which had 1998 sales of $200 million, makes vehicle structural assemblies that include closures, door beams, pillars and floor pans. It was renamed Oxford Auto France SA. Dana, of Toledo, Ohio, employs more than 2,500 people in France and operates 13 manufacturing operations in the country.
HONORS - DaimlerChrysler has presented Gold Pentastar Awards for excellence in the 1998 model year to Dana Corp.'s EPIC Technical Group in Archbold, Ohio; BTR Sealing Systems North America's SSIA (vehicle sealing systems Iowa) division in Keokuk, Iowa; and BTR's Frederick, Okla., division.
HONORS - Queen City Steel Treating Co. of Cincinnati has earned Ford Motor Co.'s Q1 quality designation.
ADDITION - Ricardo Inc. has added a powertrain calibration department to its Detroit Technical Center. The department will allow Ricardo to offer more consulting services and provide complete powertrain calibrations with emissions, driveability and four-season testing.
