LOS ANGELES - Penske Auto Centers Inc. will provide maintenance, repairs and warranty work for Daewoo Motor America vehicles at 300 Penske centers nationwide by the end of 1999. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Penske shops will have Daewoo parts, service publications, special service tools and direct telephone access to the Daewoo technical assistance center. There also will be service training for Penske technicians.
Daewoo hopes to have linked with 200 Penske Auto Centers in the Northeast and West by the end of March and with another 100 locations across the United States in the next few months. Daewoo already has 61 service centers in operation. Those are a combination of Daewoo factory stores and independent service outlets.
Daewoo spokesman Ron Schwenger said there will be no cap on warranty reimbursements for repairs done by Penske.
'There is no written limitation. Whatever needs to be replaced will be replaced,' Schwenger said.
A Penske spokesman did not return phone calls.
Daewoo had approached Phila-delphia-based The Pep Boys-Manny, Moe & Jack last year in a similar service deal that might have included selling Daewoo vehicles, but Pep Boys backed off.
'The fit just wasn't there. Even if we weren't selling the cars, we didn't want to create the impression of an implied endorsement of Daewoo vehicles with an exclusive service relationship,' said Fred Stampone, Pep Boys senior vice president of administration. 'That's what makes us different from a car dealership.'
