FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Bob Thomas is leaving Republic Industries Inc. less than two years after becoming executive vice president in charge of strategic marketing.
Thomas is the second official to exit the Republic executive offices in less than a month. Former dealer Marshall Chesrown stepped down as chief of Republic's AutoNation used-car superstore chain at the end of January. Chesrown's resignation conicided with Republic's move to decentralize AutoNation's operations and give the district offices more responsibility.
Thomas, who will be 54 this week, says he simply wanted to retire from the business and move to his Arizona mountain property to fish and play golf.
He joined Republic in late 1997 after being forced out of his job as president of Nissan Motor Corp. U.S.A. Thomas joined Nissan in 1982 after 10 years with Ford Motor. Co.
