Ford Kansas City, which builds the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique, is down because of slow sales of those models.
GM's Orion Township plant is closed because of poor sales of the Buick Park Avenue and Oldsmo-bile Aurora.
Year-to-date North American car and truck production reached 1 million on Tuesday, Jan. 26, two days earlier than in 1998.
