The Mercedes-AMG ML55, scheduled to debut in fall of 1999, will spark memories of the aggressively styled concept car that spawned the M-class sport-utility. That concept, shown at the Detroit auto show in 1996, featured dramatically flared fenders and a flashiness not typically associated with the German luxury maker. When the production vehicle arrived for the 1998 model year, it was considerably tamer. This computer-enhanced photo of the coming AMG version shows a sportier, more rounded appearance, with flared fenders and front fascia that clearly reflect the parentage of the concept vehicle. Under the hood will be a powerful 5.5-liter V-8 that will pump out 340 hp and produce a top speed of 150 mph.
