DailmerChrysler Canada will lay off 2,000 workers at its Pillette Road plant in Windsor, Ontario, today, Dec. 7. They will return Jan. 4. The plant, which produces the Dodge Ram Van and Ram Wagon, is down because of high inventories of those models. Earlier, the plant was scheduled to be closed only the week of Dec. 7.
DaimlerChrysler Corp. also laid off 348 'tag relief' workers at the Fenton, Mo., minivan plant on Monday, Nov. 30. Those workers fill in for regular assembly-line workers when they go on break.
Ford Motor Co.'s North American car and truck production for the year to date reached 4 million on Tuesday, Dec. 1, eight days later than in 1997.
U.S. car and truck manufacturers produced their 11-millionth vehicle of the year on Dec. 3, two days later than last year. Truck production is up 3.6 percent, and car production is down 6.1 percent. Total U.S. production is down 1.2 percent this year.
