THRIFTY TESTS RETAIL - Thrifty Car Rental is testing the waters of the used-car market by opening three Thrifty Car Sales retail locations. One of the locations is company-owned, and the other two are franchise operations. Thrifty is part of the publicly traded Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. of Tulsa, Okla.
ADESA SALES ARE UP - Adesa Corp. sold 232,000 vehicles at 28 wholesale auctions in the first three quarters of 1998, up from 203,000 in 1997, said parent Minnesota Power Inc. of Duluth, Minn. Since the 1997 period, Indianapolis-based Adesa had added four auctions. Minnesota Power had net income of $20.6 million for its auto services segment for the nine months, up 77.6 percent from 1997. The segment includes Adesa; Automotive Finance Corp., which provides floorplanning services to used-car dealers; and Great Rigs Inc., a vehicle-transport company.
HIGHER NET - Insurance Auto Auctions Inc., a Schaumburg, Ill., salvage auction company, had net earnings of $4.9 million for the first nine months of 1998, up from $3 million in 1997.
MARKET UP - Wholesale auction volumes and prices continued to climb in September, said ADT Automotive Inc., the Nashville, Tenn., auction chain. ADT's Wholesale Used Car Market Index rose 12.3 percent from September 1997. It is based on volumes and prices at ADT auction sales but excludes closed factory sales.
