TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp. said last week it is recalling about 68,000 vehicles - including export RAV4s - to repair a faulty washer in the front differential.
The recall encompasses about 24,000 RAV4s exported to 60 nations, including 17,000 to the United States and 1,600 to Canada. Another 4,000 RAV4s sold in Japan are covered by the recall, which applies to nine models manufactured between March and October 1996.
If the washer is damaged, acceleration may be impaired or, at worst, driving may become difficult, said Toyota spokeswoman Ririko Takeuchi. The recall will involve either replacing the washer or, if it is damaged, replacing the entire automatic transmission.
