Mazda Motor Corp.'s new Familia, known as the Protege in the United States, is the first to show off a 'front face' design that Mazda President James Miller said will become common to all Mazda vehicles. The Familia also has optional side airbags and a new 1.5-liter engine with sequential valve timing that puts out 130 hp. Mazda plans to sell 5,000 a month in Japan and 15,000 a month overseas when it goes on sale in North America and Europe this summer. In Japan, the Familia is priced at the same level as its predecessor, with the high-volume version tagged at ¥1.3 million, or $9,350 at current exchange rates.
