Over the next decade, key suppliers will be large enough, diversified enough and technically sophisticated enough to design and deliver entire sections of vehicles. To reach that stage, parts makers must transform themselves into multicomponent 'systems integrators,' capable of bringing together their own and other suppliers' expertise in different products and technologies. Many are already far along that path, although automakers have not yet relinquished many large-scale projects. Some predictions hold that only 15 to 20 firms will reach this stage.
