Manufacturers of Class 8 heavy-duty trucks posted substantial sales gains for April. Volvo Trucks North America Inc. and Peterbilt Motors Co. were especially strong.
Volvo's Class 8 sales totaled 2,478 in April, up 70.4 percent from April 1997. Peterbilt's Class 8 sales rose 33.2 percent to 2,080. Freightliner, Kenworth and Mack also showed big gains.
Overall sales of Class 8 trucks increased 16.6 percent in April, to 18,448. For the first four months of 1998, they were up 15.7 percent to 63,560.
Combined sales of heavy-duty and medium-duty commercial trucks in the United States rose 11 percent for the month, to 37,598. Four-month sales climbed 9.1 percent to 129,570.
