Some designers are calling Fiat's Multipla minivan bold and courageous. Fiat Auto S.p.A. President Roberto Testore says it is audacious.
Designers were told not to compromise on appearance but to design the Multipla to be practical, he said.
Thus, the windshield meets the hood at an unconventional angle, because to look 'normal' would have wasted space. The top of the car is wider than the bottom.
Fiat didn't clinic the car with customers, said company spokes-man Peter Newton. 'Paolo Can-teralla doesn't believe in it,' said Newton. 'He says we should follow our convictions.'
The Multipla will compete with the Renault Megane Scenic. Customers won't confuse the two.
