General Motors will suspend production this week in Wilmington, Del., for work on the plant's paint shop. The plant, which assembles the Chevrolet Malibu, was shut down the week of April 13 for inventory adjustment.
Production of the Chrysler 300M began Monday, April 20, in Bramalea, Ontario.
The 5-millionth North American vehicle of the year was produced Tuesday, April 21, two days earlier than in 1997. Also on April 21, U.S. truck production reached 2 million, eight days earlier than it was reached last year.
For the year to date, the Big 3 have produced 78.2 percent of the cars and trucks built in North America, and the Japanese have turned out 18.3 percent. The shares are little changed from a year ago, when it was Big 3, 79 percent; Japanese, 18.4 percent.
