TROLLHATTAN, Sweden - Saab Automobile AB is replacing some of its several hundred suppliers on the 9-5 program.
Saab President Robert Hendry would not name them.
'Some were not meeting the design specifications,' he said.
Quality is essential to Saab. Poor quality hurt the 1993 launch of the Saab 900.
'When I got here, I sent a letter to the CEOs of all our suppliers to tell them how important the car was to us,' said Hendry. Most responded with enthusiasm, he said, but others 'haven't given it the kind of seriousness they should.'
Hendry took engineers off a small-car project and put them to work validating components and designs for the 9-5.
'We can't tolerate the old days,' said Hendry. 'We had suppliers who acted like they were doing us a favor building parts.'
