North American vehicle output in June totaled 1,364,130 units, 1.6 percent below June 1996.
June car production in the United States, Canada and Mexico was 704,128, a drop of 7.4 percent from last year's 760,458.
Truck producers assembled 660,002 vehicles, just 3,766 above the year-ago month.
Ford Motor Co. halted production at its Wixom, Mich., plant to complete the changeover to the all-new Lincoln Town Car and redesigned Lincoln Continental. Production is scheduled to resume next Monday, July 21.
Ford also has idled its Avon Lake, Ohio, assembly plant because of slow sales. The plant assembled an estimated 2,900 Mercury Villagers and Nissan Quests each week.
