Mercedes-Benz is preparing a replacement for the S class that is due for introduction at the end of 1998. The line, code-named W220, will be quite different from the current cars: The new S class is lighter, narrower and about 4.4 inches shorter. The wheelbase remains the same. All the sheet metal is new, yet the styling is unmistakably Mercedes. The new line is accented by sloping front styling and oval-shaped headlamps, which on this test vehicle are camouflaged. Power will come from V-6, V-8 and V-12 engines.
LIGHTER, NARROWER S CLASS
