Sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks totaled 33,123 units in May, down 2.3 percent from May 1996. For the first five months of 1997, makers sold 151,560 medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, off 1.4 percent from the 1996 pace.
Class 8 truck sales dropped 3.5 percent in May, and were off 4.2 percent for the year.
Mack, Kenworth, and Navistar did well in the Class 8 category in May. Mack sales rose 21.3 percent, Kenworth sales rose up 5.5 percent, and Navistar sales gained 5 percent.
May's drop in Class 8 sales came after a slight rise - 92 units - in April.
So far this year, Navistar has been the big gainer in Class 8 market share, up nearly two points from 1996 levels. Mack, Kenworth and Volvo/GM also have had increases. (See below.)
