Goals for electronic data interchange by suppliers. Deadlines vary slightly by automaker. General Motors highly recommends meeting the time goals, but does not make it a requirement.
January 1996: Tier 1 suppliers must receive material orders and shipping schedules from automakers via electronic data interchange.
January 1996: Tier 1 suppliers must verify information electronically in advance-shipping notifications to automakers, using such techniques as scanning bar codes. (GM set deadline for January 1997. Chrysler deadline is December 1997.)
January 1998: Tier 1 suppliers must send material orders to Tier 2 suppliers via electronic data interchange no less than once a week. (Chrysler sets deadline for July 1998.) Material order and shipping schedule information from automakers must automatically flow into computer scheduling systems of Tier 1 suppliers.
January 1999: Tier 2 suppliers must send material orders to their Tier 3 suppliers electronically no less than once a week. (Ford deadline is July 1999. GM has not recommended this step.)
July 1999: Ford requires Tier 1 suppliers to be able to send shipping requirements to Tier 2 suppliers daily.
