General Motors plans to boldly redesign its new headquarters, the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, a building long criticized for its uninviting, fortresslike appearance. This is a rendering of the proposed winter garden, a multistory atrium that will be erected at the rear of the complex, facing the Detroit River. The atrium will house restaurants and shops and open onto a riverfront promenade. In addition, the center's front lobby, which is not pictured, will be transformed into GM's welcome center, which will lead to the automaker's new heritage museum and a display area.
