Ultra-high modulus adhesive for mixed material bonding

Launched on the BMW i3/i8 in 2013, Sika's Ultra-High Modulus Adhesive for Mixed Material Bonding is aimed at structural joining of dissimilar lightweight materials such as aluminum and CFRP where welding is not possible. Sika's innovation allows BMW to join dissimilar materials with different thermal expansion characteristics while maintaining mechanical integrity of the bonded assembly. Beyond the material science, Sika and BMW worked closely on the application engineering to synchronize the curing process with assembly line timing requirements to facilitate structural adhesive bonding in a production environment. As a testament to the significance of this innovation, representatives from the major aerospace manufacturers and other automotive "disrupters" have visited BMW and Sika to explore the use of this approach in aircraft and additional automotive applications.
