Honda R&D Americas for partnership with ArcelorMittal and Magna-Cosma International

Laser Ablation Process

As a leader in using hot stamping of high-strength steel, Honda worked with COSMA and ArcelorMittal to manufacturer an entire door ring. Since the size of the door ring exceeded the width of the coils, ArcelorMittal needed to innovate new laser welded tailored blanks, while COSMA worked to develop hot stamping processes for a large blank incorporating more than one steel gauge. Honda collaborated closely in validating the overall process even making certain that their frame design kept within the limitations of a new process. The deep collaboration resulted in better crash performance at reduced overall weights.
