Volvo Cars will double down its bet on its upcoming U.S. factory by adding production of its next-generation XC90 crossover and boosting investment to a total of $1.1 billion. The XC90 -- currently built in Torslanda, Sweden -- is the second vehicle planned for production at the plant in South Carolina.

Volvo Cars reported double-digit improvements in 2016 earnings and revenue on Wednesday and forecast a fourth consecutive year of record sales for 2017. Operating profit rose 66 percent to 11 billion Swedish crowns ($1.24 billion) and revenue increased 10 percent to 180.7 billion crowns.
