Volkswagen is going on the offensive in North America, challenging the likes of General Motors and Ford Motor Co. with a wave of new light trucks and battery-powered cars. VW's namesake marque will expand its range of SUVs, crossovers and sedans and start making electric autos in North America in 2021 in a bid to “evolve from a niche supplier” into a successful mainstream carmaker in the region.

VW plans a sporty Passat midsize concept at the L.A. auto show this week to burnish the company's beefed-up focus on the U.S. market. VW says the Passat GT concept has more than 20 design changes from the standard Passat midsize sedan, including a suspension that's been lowered by 0.6 inches and unique grille, fascia and other accents.
