BEHIND THE NUMBERS

For this report, Automotive News examined a vehicle recall data set made available by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, comprising recalls of more than 98,000 products since 1966, when the first federal auto-safety agency was created.
Entries in the NHTSA data set were then refined to include only original-equipment recalls by automakers and to exclude recalls led by suppliers (including tire makers), as well as recalls of car seats, replacement parts and aftermarket equipment regulated by NHTSA. The entries were then further edited to include only passenger cars and light trucks.
The resulting data set yielded 5,183 unique recalls from 1966 through September, potentially covering more than 500 million units of about 19,000 vehicle models.
Each recall signifies a unique NHTSA campaign number. A single campaign can encompass multiple makes, models and model years affected by a common defect.
