General Motors CEO Mary Barra with the redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Volt at the 2015 Detroit auto show.
SAN FRANCISCO -- Last week, General Motors let auto writers drive two of the company’s most important new products: the 2016 Chevrolet Volt and the diesel-powered 2016 Colorado pickup.
Neither of these vehicles is going to light up the U.S. sales charts for Chevrolet. Oil prices have stabilized between $44 and $47 per barrel, cutting average U.S. prices for regular gasoline prices to under $3 per gallon in most states. The demand for gasoline-electric hybrid cars isn’t strong right now.
As for the Colorado, Chevy officials expect only about 10 percent of buyers to spend an additional $3,730 fo ... Continue reading "GM flexes engineering prowess with 2016 Chevy Volt, Colorado diesel" » Oct 6, 2015 11:45 am U.S. ET
Mike Thomas, a writer who lives in suburban Orlando, bought his first diesel-powered vehicle, a Ram EcoDiesel pickup, earlier this year. Now he’s worried that Volkswagen’s rigged diesel engines to skirt emissions tests will drag his truck into the mess.
That is a valid concern. All diesel-powered vehicles are today operating under a thick but likely temporary black cloud of suspicion caused by the deception at VW.
The EPA said it will now conduct on-road testing of all light-duty diesel engines in the U.S. to ensure they don’t have VW-style defeat devices to switch off emissions systems. ... Continue reading "VW's travails aside, diesel fans remain loyal" » Sep 29, 2015 11:45 am U.S. ET
The news of Volkswagen’s diesel emissions-cheating scheme was still coming into focus this week when Jose Munoz, chairman of Nissan North America, took to the podium for an upbeat press luncheon in Detroit to tell reporters about product enhancements to the 2016 Nissan Altima sedan.
One had nothing to do with the other. But Munoz is savvy enough to know that when news is bubbling the press likes to ask executives about their competitors. Munoz began with a witty defuser -- proclaiming with relief that he does not have a single diesel vehicle to talk about.
But guess what?

It’s time for the EPA to admit the system of allowing and trusting automakers to self-certify cars and light trucks for fuel economy and emissions standards no longer works.
The system, in place since the 1970s, works like this: Automakers test their own vehicles and submit the findings to the EPA, where engineers review and usually approve them. The EPA also randomly tests between 10 and 15 percent of new vehicles yearly for fuel economy and emissions at its Ann Arbor, Mich., lab.
But today, with 40 brands selling more than 300 nameplates in the U.S., there is no way the EPA can test them all. The ... Continue reading "In wake of VW scandal, it's time to scrap self-certify era" » Sep 22, 2015 12:00 pm U.S. ET
For the second time in my life, it appears that the U.S. diesel passenger car market has been mortally wounded
by a car company claiming to be its champion.
The first time, it was due to incompetence: GM foisted an underdeveloped diesel V-8 engine on customers, dealers and technicians who were ill prepared to maintain it.
This time, it’s due to outright dishonesty on the part of Volkswagen, a leader in U.S. sales of passenger cars with diesel engines. There’s nothing wr ... Continue reading "Why VW's betrayal with diesel engines is different" » Sep 21, 2015 11:00 am U.S. ET
By 8:30 a.m. last Tuesday, about the time BMW's new CEO Harald Krueger tumbled to the stage inside cavernous Hall 11, the Frankfurt auto show was veering toward an odd theme.
Amid all the predictions of European momentum -- as represented by 90-some new-vehicle introductions -- all anyone wanted to talk about was who wasn't
Krueger, having recovered from his dizzy spell, got a clean bill of health from his doctors and was sent to Munich.
Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne skipped the show altogether to pull off a new UAW labor contract in Detroit.
Former VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech didn't make the IAA for the first time since the invention ... Continue reading "Frankfurt: Lights, cameras, technology!" » Sep 21, 2015 12:01 am U.S. ET
BRATISLAVA, Slovakia -- Mainstream brands have been nuzzling closer to their luxury counterparts in recent years, adding everything from heated steering wheels to high-end sound systems and high-tech safety packages.

FRANKFURT -- Auto suppliers are not only working to make for clean air. Some also want clean hands.
At the Frankfurt auto show, German components maker Brose showed off its latest innovations -- among them, a rear door that can be opened automatically and a gas tank door that can be opened with a simple gesture.
The rear door uses electronics similar to those found in automatic liftgates, something the company makes, along with mechanical and electrical components for seats and doors.
Brose sees a touch-free door as a comfort feature. When dropping off the kids at sch ... Continue reading "Wave your hand, watch the hood pop (minus grimy fingers)" » Sep 18, 2015 6:00 am U.S. ET
