"We hold customer experience contests where the winner receives an incentive such as gift cards, vacation days or cookouts for their entire department. We have VIP parking for the outstanding employee of the month. Our favorite are contests where the winner gets to experience something with their family, such as NASCAR tickets, Dollywood passes, Tennessee football games and weekend getaways to the Grove Park Inn, where golf and spa packages are included."
Dustin Walters on helping employees develop a career path:
"We like to be very clear on what it takes to grow and develop in the company. We designed a diagram that shows how someone can navigate through an entire career by growing from an entry-level position all the way to a team leader. Our GSM actually started with our company in the detail department cleaning cars. We often use him as a perfect example of how you can grow within our store."
Dustin Walters on making work schedules more balanced or flexible:
"If you have a 90-day average above 15 cars a month in sales, then you are allowed to work your own schedule. Secondly, we understand that having a great work-life balance is instrumental in retaining the best talent. A flexible schedule is just as important as a great pay plan in most cases."
Dustin Walters on compensation:
"We recently moved from a noncommissioned pay plan to one that is heavily influenced by the finance profit on the deal. As front-end margins continue to shrink, we have placed a premium on ensuring a finance opportunity with every deal."
