Ford advances 3% on Fusion, Escape records

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co., paced by record sales of the Fusion mid-sized sedan and Escape compact crossover, posted a 3 percent U.S. sales increase in May.

Ford and Lincoln brands sold a combined 253,346 light vehicles in May. The average transaction price was just more than $30,000, up $1,200 from May 2013, said Erich Merkle, Ford’s chief U.S. sales analyst.

The Escape posted a monthly sales record of 31,896 units in May, up 10 percent from the year-earlier month. Sales through May for the Escape are flat from a year ago.

The Fusion also set a monthly record with sales of 33,881 units, up 15 percent from May 2013.

John Felice, Ford vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service, said in a statement today that the success of the Fusion and Escape in May helped the company achieve its strongest May sales since 2004.

Explorer sales leaped 21 percent from May 2013 to 20,346 units, the SUV’s best sales month since July 2005.

F-series pickup sales declined 4 percent to 68,520 units. The average transaction price was $40,000, up $780 from May 2013, Merkle said. The aluminum-bodied 2015 F-150 is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in the fourth quarter.

The C-Max continues to struggle. Its 24 percent sales decline from a year earlier, to 2,833 units, was the largest of any Ford or Lincoln vehicle for the month.

Lincoln sales rose 21 percent in May to 8,845 units.

Ford Motor finished May with 634,000 vehicles in stock, or a 65-day supply, compared with an 81-day supply at the end of April.
