Visteon makes deal to use Autonet Mobile 'connected car' software

UPDATED: 2/25/14 2:33 pm ET

DETROIT -- Visteon Corp. has announced an agreement with Autonet Mobile Inc. that will allow Visteon to integrate Autonet's telematics software into its next-generation infotainment systems.

Autonet is based in San Francisco.

Under the agreement, Autonet Mobile will provide operating system software, apps and technical support to Visteon.

Among other things, Autonet has developed mobile apps for parental controls, fleet management and remote vehicle commands. The company's software also can be used for usage-based auto insurance, highway tolls and parking fees.

Automakers can use Autonet's technology to upgrade a vehicle's software remotely, without requiring the motorist to visit the dealership.

Sterling Pratz, president and co-founder of Autonet, told Automotive News that over-the-air software updates will be a popular feature for automakers. "We're pretty excited about it," Pratz said.

Autonet currently provides software to Chrysler Group, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Subaru and Maserati.

Visteon said it expects to launch production of infotainment products for various manufacturers in the second half of 2014.

Martin Thall, president of Visteon Electronics, estimated that the auto industry's infotainment market is forecast to grow 42 percent annually, with a vehicle installation rate of 50 percent by 2018.
