There's no getting around it: This has been the year of Elon Musk. And Fortune helped make it official last week by crowning the Tesla co-founder and CEO its 2013 Business Person of the Year.

The magazine said Tesla has "become the world's most prominent maker of all-electric cars."

And Musk also got points for the other companies he leads: SpaceX, a space exploration outfit; and SolarCity, a solar power company.

Two pure auto guys landed on Fortune's top 50 list.

Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda ranked seventh, sandwiched between Amazon mogul Jeff Bezos and Google CEO Larry Page.

No. 35 is Ford CEO Alan Mulally, a regular on such lists in recent years but usually placing in the single-digits.
