Chevrolet aims 2015 Corvette Z06 at Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R

Chevrolet’s 2015 Corvette Z06, slated to be unveiled next month at the Detroit auto show, is being positioned to take on the Porsche 911 Turbo and the Nissan GT-R, a Chevrolet spokesman said.

The Z06 will join Chevrolet’s performance car lineup, which includes the SS sedan that went on sale in October, the Corvette Stingray convertible that goes on sale this month and the Camaro Z/28 that arrives in showrooms in the second quarter next year.

“What we’re seeing is a renaissance of the performance car industry,” spokesman Monte Doran said Thursday. “The performance sales for Chevrolet are right about where they were last year, and that’s with us closing the Corvette plant for six months.”

During the first 11 months of the year, General Motors said it has sold one of every four performance cars purchased in the United States. In the period, Chevrolet sold 75,552 Camaros and 14,286 Corvettes, Porsche sold 9,614 911s and Nissan sold 1,158 GT-Rs.

“If the new Z06 improves on the old to the degree that the C7 has already improved on the C6, we're going to love this thing when it arrives,” Graham Kozak of Autoweek wrote on Wednesday. Autoweek is an affiliate of Automotive News.

Chevrolet gave no details about the Z06, saying only that production is expected to begin in late 2014. Doran added: “I can tell you [the car will] be yellow.”
